My paintings are created from the love and wonder of nature. When I see a beautiful scene, I get right in there – emotionally and wholeheartedly. Sometimes, I don’t even have words to describe what I’m feeling. I fall in love with many scenes, but once I actually start to work with one, that moment when the pastel or charcoal touches the paper to begin the initial drawing, something takes over and pulls me in deeper, almost as if my logical mind fades and the scene is recreating itself. I work from photographs, not to replicate the photo itself, but with the idea of sharing the beauty of the earth while allowing the painting to become what it will. I am just the tool between the photographic scene and the one that develops into a painting. Often, I’m drawn to the moodier landscapes, yet still want to show color and interest. I may add some brighter color but always stick to what is natural in nature. What never ceases to amaze me is the exploration, the discovery, and the lessons in the process. Every painting is its unique journey, and I love it (once I get past the frustrating moments, ha-ha.) Painting with pastels brings me such joy. ---Sasha Wolfe
